On his inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” New York City, promising “a new era” and an bold start to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Figure

The 34-year-old figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Free buses
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Challenges

The new mayor must contend with concern from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has moved to address these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Basic Tests of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing city upkeep: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and ensuring reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
