Uche Ignites Dominant Palace Triumph at Shelbourne.
Even though embarking on their maiden European adventure, Crystal Palace are learning very quickly. Without star players like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a comfortable result that all but secures them a place in the Conference League qualifying rounds.
Another victory in their next match against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to seal direct passage to the knockout stages, particularly following a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Opportunity
This match offered a platform for some of Palace's fringe talent to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second beginning after arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a well-taken finish. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a second, finding the net for the second game in succession.
A Shelbourne side that had finished their league season proved outmatched against a mostly rotated Palace lineup. The Londoners were further weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee problems.
Dominance Established from the Start
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly established dominance. A slick move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close minutes later, driving a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the official waved away the protests.
The formerArsenal man did not have wait long to get his goal, tapping home from close range after Uche's effort had hit the post.
The home side were clinging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for a couple of agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the crossbar with a header from a corner.
Pino Wraps Up the Game
The match was effectively over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past some comically weak challenges before coolly dispatching a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to withdraw several individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring with his first touch, only to see his shot blocked.
The youngster was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also missed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still scope for improvement in his game.
A solitary worry for Palace was a late injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his senior debut, capping an otherwise positive evening for the visiting side.
