The Details Known Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting

No fewer than 16 lives lost their lives and more than 40 were wounded when gunmen shot at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an incident local police have called a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, authorities have announced the number of fatalities stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to hospital.

Those who died have not yet been formally identified, but police believe their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the individuals who have been named to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She described the events before the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain under care, with a number in a critical state. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
