Tetris Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

Each time a significant honors show approaches, there’s always a clamor to include of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
  • Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often small games, however the design of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers function at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
