Atkinson felt a problem in his left leg after the final ball in his spell at the MCG.
The touring camp indicated the 27-year-old felt some "soreness" and required time off the field to undergo evaluation "in the coming hours".
The final Test of the series in Sydney gets underway on Sunday, 4 January.
England have previously lost fast bowlers one seamer to a knee injury and another paceman because of a side injury on this Ashes tour.
