Martínez Double Keeps Inter in Pursuit of Leaders

Inter forward Lautaro Martínez netted a late double to earn his team a 2-0 victory at Pisa, keeping the visitors firmly engaged in the Serie A title race in spite of a less than convincing display.

Led by Cristian Chivu, Inter currently are placed in third position in the table with 27 points, level with second-placed Roma and just one point adrift of table-toppers Milan. Meanwhile, Pisa hold the third bottom spot with 10 points.

Inter arrived in Tuscany aiming to get back on track after suffering a loss to rivals by Milan recently, followed by a European loss at Atlético Madrid. Nonetheless, they were forced to fight throughout by newly-promoted Pisa. The home team created plenty of opportunities, but a clinical Inter scored the opener in the 69th minute when Argentine Martínez drilled a one-time shot into the top of the net. The forward then tapped in from close range seven minutes from time.

Inter’s capacity to score even with difficult circumstances proved crucial in securing three points.

In Spain, Real Sociedad staged a thrilling comeback from 2-0 down to equalize at home against Villarreal, only to lose to a late strike five minutes into added time. In the late Spanish match, Real Madrid journey to Girona requiring a win to go back to the summit above Barcelona, who secured a 3-1 triumph over Alavés on Saturday.
