Astronaut Discloses Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Backlash Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also included high-profile passengers.

The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, recalling a check-in call from a mission companion in the period after the journey.

She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has focused her career on gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her studies and astronaut training to the historic significance of her roots – was drowned out under the deluge of sexist vitriol.

She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work fighting for justice for survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after an attack during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

The Fog Begins to Lift

In the time since reaching space, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose kindness were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.

She noted that amid the criticism, important benefits had come out of the flight, including elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

The computer-piloted spacecraft departed Texas in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the edge of space.
