Adult Swim's Leading New Show of 2025 Earns a Major Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the network unveiled a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. During a period often characterized by cynicism, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and championed its peculiarly charming appeal.
"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about watching this charming family navigate their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to evolve comedy past its prevailing cynical streak. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
The Path Forward
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to experience the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
