A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's key government projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in civilian projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition urged an urgent suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a full technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and management of these national undertakings.
